Anti-Modern Slavery Policy

Last updated May 2026.

Sanitopia is committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all our work. We have a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery, human trafficking, forced labour and any form of exploitation within our operations and supply chains. This statement is published in the spirit of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015.

Our organisation

Sanitopia is a UK Community Interest Company and a registered non-profit in Ghana. We build sanitation facilities for schools and communities across Africa. Our work involves a mix of UK-based oversight and Ghana-based construction delivery, supported by local contractors and material suppliers.

Our commitment

We expect every person who works for or with Sanitopia, including employees, volunteers, contractors and suppliers, to share our commitment to ethical conduct. We do not tolerate:

  • Forced, bonded or compulsory labour
  • Child labour
  • Human trafficking in any form
  • Withholding of identity documents to control workers
  • Wages below the legal minimum applicable in each jurisdiction

Our supply chains

Our principal supply chain risk sits in our Ghana construction operations, where we engage contractors, labourers and material suppliers. Before engaging a new contractor we carry out reasonable checks on their practices, including how they recruit, pay and treat their workers.

Due diligence

To support compliance with this policy we:

  • Communicate our standards to all contractors and suppliers
  • Include anti-slavery commitments in our partnership agreements where appropriate
  • Review reports of concern promptly and confidentially
  • Work only with partners who can demonstrate fair treatment of their workers

Reporting concerns

Anyone who suspects modern slavery in our operations or supply chains is encouraged to report it. Reports can be made in confidence to info@sanitopiaprojects.org. We will investigate every report and take appropriate action, which may include terminating partnerships and referring matters to the relevant authorities.

Training and awareness

Our leadership and Ghana operations team receive regular guidance on how to identify warning signs of modern slavery and how to respond.

Governance

Responsibility for this policy sits with the Board of Sanitopia. The policy is reviewed at least annually and updated as needed to reflect our growing operations.
