On 20 May 2026, the Ghana Library Authority commissioned a 12-seater modern WASH facility at the George Padmore Research Library on African Affairs in Accra. The facility was fully financed and delivered by Sanitopia CIC, and marks the first completed project under the partnership signed between the two organisations.

The ceremony brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, corporate stakeholders and media practitioners.

Libraries as community infrastructure

Speaking at the commissioning, the Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr Ziblim Alhassan Betintiche, set out why sanitation belongs in a library.

Libraries are no longer spaces only for books and reading. They are now centres of learning, innovation, community development, and social transformation.

He noted that the facility aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation, and confirmed that further WASH facilities will follow across libraries nationwide.

The Authority operates 139 public libraries across Ghana. Alongside its physical network it runs the Ghana Library App, a zero-rated platform supported by Telecel and MTN that allows users to access books and learning resources without data charges, and has introduced extended opening hours at the National Children's Library in line with the government's 24-hour economy policy.

The first of many

The George Padmore facility is the first phase of a commitment to deliver 150 sanitation facilities across the Ghana Library Authority network over five years, agreed under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Sanitopia CIC and the Authority.

Speaking on behalf of Sanitopia, Founder and Chairman Richard Kojo Acheampong framed the work in terms beyond construction.

This initiative is not merely about infrastructure. It is about health, dignity, and education. It is about giving our children a safe and clean environment to learn and thrive.

He described the 150 facilities as going beyond physical structures, serving as symbols of progress, respect and Ghana's commitment to sustainable development, and called on government, corporate organisations, development partners and philanthropists to support the expansion of access to safe sanitation across the country.

Three pillars

Sanitopia's work in Ghana is organised around three areas: community-centred sanitation facilities, waste-to-value innovation that turns human waste into biogas and fertiliser, and capacity building through partnerships.

More than toilets

This project is about more than toilets and sanitation. It is about helping people feel safe, healthy and comfortable.

At Sanitopia we believe everyone should have access to clean and safe sanitation. It can help schools, libraries and communities become better places for everyone.

Seeing this project come to life reminded us why we do what we do. Every project helps improve lives and brings hope to communities across Africa.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this possible, including Gurpreet Gill, Richard Acheampong, and all our partners and supporters. This is only the beginning.
